Pierced By Sophie will not use jewellery that has not been sourced by Sophie. This Includes for new piercings or jewellery changes in existing piercings.
This is not because we want to make a sale from you but simply because we are unable to ensure the quality and safety of the jewellery of outside jewellery.
Sophie regularly educates clients on the safety of jewellery that is and isn't suitable for long term wear in the body. - Please see the 'ARGYRIA section below for more on this
Have you ever noticed a green/greyish stain around your piercings or even on your jewellery?
Argyria is where silver reacts with body fluids and oxidises into your piercing site, turning the area grey or even black looking. This is NOT treatable or reversible .
For this reason silver should only ever be worn in FULLY HEALED lobe piercings and for no more than a couple of hours at a time - always removed at night.
Silver or any unverifiable metal for that fact should ever be worn in any other piercing.
Sophie always recommends to wear Implant grade titanium or solid 14ct gold for fresh/healed piercings or 18ct gold for healed piercings.
Please only follow the aftercare given by your professional piercer and if you have any doubt please contact them directly
General Aftercare
DO NOT:
- Twist/turn/touch your piercing at all
- Sleep or put pressure directly on your new piercing
DO:
- Always wash your hands prior to cleaning your piercing
- Clean your piercing x2 a day
- x 1 use the shower head with luke warm water to dislodge any debris, spray with sterile saline and dab dry with a clean cotton swab
- x1 a day spray piercing site and 1 end of clean cotton swab to dab dry
Extra Recommendations
- Sophie recommends using neck support to stop you from rolling onto your new piercing. A travel pillow or v shaped maternity pillow will do the trick.
- When cleaning your new piercing, you must make sure you clean it clock-wise to prevent the end from becoming loose - Sophie will always demonstrate how your jewellery fits and how you can ensure a tight fit
- For the first 6 weeks you must avoid submerging your piercing in water - this includes swimming pools/saunas/hot tubs or anywhere you’re at risk of coming into contact with bacteria.
- A longer bar is used when piercing to accommodate for minimal swelling, once that swelling has reduced you must come in for a jewellery downsize. Roughly 6-8 weeks after initial piercing. If your piercing is not downsized in time and is slept on or played with, this can cause the angle/look of your piercing to change which can be an issue for allowing the piercing to heal.
Piercing lumps, bumps + keloids
'I think I have a KELOID!!' - 99.9% of the time we receive this message It is actually just a piercing bump. Although as she is is not medically trained, Sophie is unable to give a diagnosis therefore if in any doubt we will advise you to seek help from a medical professional.
Bumps are very common and usually occur when a piercing is irritated, this is usually caused by one of the following;
- Sleeping on, applying pressure such as wearing headphones or answering the phone with the side of your piercing
- Trauma caused to the area
- Touching or turning the jewellery
- Applying makeup products or creams around the area
- Clothing catching or pulling on the piercing
At the first sign of a bump go over the aftercare we mentioned earlier, if it doesn’t go down in a timely manner get in touch with us and we'll arrange getting you in for a check up.
